The Miriam Tlali Reading and Book Club Celebrates World Book Day.
World Book and Copyright Day is a celebration to promote the enjoyment of books and reading.
Each year, on 23 April, celebrations take place all over the world to recognize the magical power of books – a link between the past and the future, a bridge between generations and across cultures.
On this UNESCO-declared occasion, international organizations representing the three major sectors of the book industry – publishers, booksellers, libraries and the community at large gather to engage on matters of literature.
To weigh in the world activities, the Miriam Tlali Reading and Book Club will host a discussion entitled “Parents’ involvement is the number one predictor of early literacy success and future academic achievement”, on the 20th of April 2019.
The dialogue will feature mother and daughter, multiple-award winning author of 5 books, Victorine Mbong Shu and 12-Year-Old Stacey Fru, a multiple-award winning author of 3 books.
Stacey Fru is the youngest South African Multiple Award-Winning Author of Chapter Books who wrote her 1st book, ‘Smelly Cats’ without her parents’ knowledge at the age of 7. This book was approved by the South African Department of Basic Education as suitable for young learners from Early Childhood through to Primary School.
Victorine Mbong Shu is a mother of 4 and a wife. She is BrandSA Play-Your-Part Ambassador, a Businesswoman, who has been in education and training since 2002 as CEO of Profounder Intelligence Management Services, a Publisher, Editor, Researcher, Transformational Speaker, Mentor, Material Developer, Facilitator, Assessor, Moderator and TV Talk Show Host at Children Television South Africa (CTVSA).
There’s no question that literacy is one of the most important skills a child will ever learn because it opens so many doors for them and their future. So how do you know if they’re ready to take on that new and exciting adventure?
There are few studies to date on parent involvement in early literacy skills and development. Yet, educators know that the number one predictor of lifelong academic achievement is parental involvement. Parent involvement in early literacy is directly connected to academic achievement.
The discussion will take place on the 20th April 2019, 13H00 to 15H00 at 74 Mimosa Road, Randpark Ridge, 2174. Attendance is free but confirmation of attendance is compulsory.
