PROF PITIKA NTULI, SCULPTOR,POET, WRITER ANDACADEMIC DELIVERS THE 3RD HUGH MASEKELA ANNUAL LECTURE

In honour of Bro Hugh Masekela– the world-renowned flugelhornist, trumpeter, bandleader, composer, singer, social, cultural and political and heritage activist – the wRite associates, in partnership with the University of Johannesburg, are organising the 3rd annual lecture,to take place at the University of Johannesburg, Soweto Campus, FundauJabule Lecturing Hall G01, on Wednesday, 7th September 2016, 17H30 for 18H30.

Prof PitikaNtuli, the internationally acclaimed sculptor, poet, author, academic and political activist, will deliver the 3rd Hugh Masekela Annual Lecture, titled, “African Cultural Renaissance: Decoloniality and the Coloniality of Being”

Prof Ntuli journeyed from teaching at a UN refugee school in Swaziland, to being imprisoned for his anti-Apartheid activities, to being exiled in London, to working with international artists and returning to South Africa to advance the role of art in society in projects such as Provocation for Reconciliation.

The two previous lectures were delivered by internationally renowned musicians, Drs Oliver Mtukudzi and Sibongile Khumalo, concluded Seakhoa.

“The Hugh Masekela Lecture and Colloquia is growing by leaps and bounds, the truest testimony of celebrating one of our leading living legends, Bro Hugh, beyond his vast and impressive musical canvass, taking into account his intellectual and heritage activist footprint”, said Mr Morakabe Seakhoa, the Managing Director of the wRite associates and Project Director of the Hugh Masekela Annual Lecture and Colloquia.

Seakhoa said the Lecture& Dialogue are a result of an exciting and long-term partnership with the University of Johannesburg.  “The aim of the programme”, continued Seakhoa,“is to create a platform for heritage, cultural, academic, art, and social discourse to celebrate and reflect on Masekela’s philosophy, his work and contribution to the liberation and betterment of society”.

This annual programme – under the wRite associates’ broader Arts, Culture & Heritage Lecture & Dialogue Series –continues its founding aim offeaturing renowned icons in music, heritage, cultural, human rights, literary, academic and political fields to deliver the lecture.

The annual Hugh Masekela Lecture and Colloquia is a long-term partnership between the UJ and wRite associates. It aims to create a platform for heritage, cultural, academic, art, and social discourse to celebrate and reflect on Masekela’s philosophy, his work and contribution to the liberation and betterment of society.
