Magashe Titus Mafolo

Magashe Titus Mafolo was born in Sekhukhune in Limpopo in January 1956. At

four years old he went to stay in Atteridgeville with his family. He went to the

local Lower Primary School, Seaparankwe and then to the Higher Primary School,

Walton Jameson School. He did his Matric at Hofmeyr High School. He was one

of the Student leaders of 1976 and since then became an anti-apartheid activist

until Freedom in 1994. He has been detained many times, harassed, tortured and

banned by the apartheid regime. He trained as a Journalist and, among others,

edited the Tshwane-based community newspaper, The Eye, and was one of the

media workers who started what became known as ‘Alternative Media’, in the

late 1970s and early 1980s.

Mafolo was a National Executive Member and also worked fulltime for the United

Democratic Front. He has worked in numerous publications, but mainly those

in the UDF and ANC. In 1994 Mafolo became a Member of Parliament and

Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Housing. From 1998 to 2008 he was

Advisor to President Mbeki and his chief Speech Writer. Mafolo is currently doing

consulting work. He is married with three sons and one daughter.
